TN-SAUM-01 — Magazine Length, Throat and Bullet Seating
The 7mm SAUM’s 2.825-inch standardized envelope is not a magazine drawing or universal seating instruction. This Technical Note separates cartridge length, usable magazine space, throat geometry and bullet form, then shows what must be verified in the actual rifle.
The 7mm SAUM’s standardized cartridge envelope is only the beginning of the fit question. Usable magazine length, chamber throat and the geometry of the exact bullet determine whether a cartridge assembly will feed, chamber and preserve the intended relationship between bullet and rifle.
The short answer
SAAMI identifies a 2.825-inch maximum overall cartridge length for the 7mm Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum. That is a cartridge-and-chamber interoperability boundary. It is not a magazine drawing, a seating recommendation or a description of every SAUM rifle.

What the standard does—and does not—establish
The SAAMI cartridge-and-chamber drawing provides the dimensional framework used for commercial interoperability. It establishes neither a rifle’s internal magazine length nor the best cartridge assembly for a chosen bullet.
A cartridge can remain inside the standardized maximum and still be a poor fit for a particular magazine, throat or feeding path. Conversely, a specialized rifle may provide more usable magazine room than another rifle carrying the same cartridge designation. “Short action” is a platform description, not one universal internal magazine measurement.
Why the exact bullet changes the answer
Two .284-inch bullets of equal weight may have different nose lengths, ogives, bearing surfaces and overall lengths. A long projectile may need a different seating relationship to fit the magazine or remain within published data. That can change how much of the bullet occupies the case and how the assembly relates to the throat.
Weight is therefore not a seating specification. Published data must be read with its stated bullet, tested cartridge length, barrel, twist and components.
How published data should be used
Manufacturer data provides evidence for the combinations and test conditions it identifies. It should not be converted into a universal SAUM assembly or a promised rifle velocity. For actual loading, use current published data applicable to the exact components and follow every stated limit. This note does not reproduce or replace loading data.
A rifle-specific verification sequence
- Confirm the firearm manufacturer’s chambering and instructions.
- Identify the exact bullet and its geometry and minimum-twist guidance.
- Use current reputable published data for the stated components.
- Confirm the assembly remains inside every applicable published limit.
- Verify usable magazine space, feeding and chambering in the actual rifle.
- Verify velocity, zero and field behavior rather than adopting a test-barrel result.
