What changes when a 6.5 Creedmoor match load moves from 140 to 147 grains?

Hornady Match 6.5 Creedmoor ammunition with the 147-grain ELD Match bullet is a heavier factory target-load option. The extra seven grains do not automatically make it better, more accurate or better suited to every barrel. They create a different factory configuration for a shooter to test.

Hornady continues to list item 81501 in its 2026 catalog. GCA does not currently have this product in stock, so this page remains a product reference rather than an active sales recommendation.

Published factory configuration

Cartridge: 6.5 Creedmoor
Bullet: 147-grain ELD Match
Product line: Hornady Match
Manufacturer item number: 81501
Published muzzle velocity: 2,695 fps
Published G1 ballistic coefficient: .697
Package: 20 factory-loaded rounds

The 147-grain load carries a higher published G1 ballistic coefficient than Hornady’s 140-grain ELD Match load, while Hornady publishes a slightly lower muzzle velocity. Those catalog numbers describe the factory reference conditions; they do not establish what your rifle will shoot best.

When the 147-grain option is worth testing

You are comparing factory match ammunition at extended distances.
Your rifle is already proven with heavier 6.5 mm match bullets.
You will measure group size, point of impact and velocity rather than assume the higher ballistic coefficient decides the result.

When to start elsewhere

If the immediate question is hunting ammunition versus target ammunition, the more useful first comparison is the purpose-built 143-grain hunting load against an available 140-grain target load. If the question is 140 versus 147 grains for match use, test both only when both are genuinely obtainable and the additional comparison serves a measured shooting objective.

Start with 6.5 Creedmoor 143-Grain Hunting Load vs. 140-Grain Match Load, then use the 6.5 Creedmoor Cartridge Master Compendium for deeper context.

Safety and verification

Use only in a firearm marked for 6.5 Creedmoor and in safe operating condition.
Follow the firearm and ammunition manufacturers’ instructions and warnings.
Confirm function, zero and point of impact in the rifle that will be used.
Do not infer stability, supersonic range or wind performance without rifle-specific inputs and verified ballistic data.
