Purpose of This Session
Most factory .44 Magnum ammunition is designed to be “good enough” across both revolvers and rifles.
That compromise leaves performance on the table—especially in short-barrel lever guns.
The purpose of this Shooter’s Edge session is to develop an ideal, platform-tuned load specifically for the Marlin 1894 SBL with a 16.1″ barrel.
This work is not about generic compatibility.
It is about optimizing Gold Country Ammo bullets for this exact rifle configuration so shooters and hunters can rely on:
- Predictable accuracy
- Consistent point of impact
- Stable internal ballistics
- Repeatable performance across lots
This also creates a reference path for handloaders, allowing them to recreate equivalent performance using Gold Country Ammo bullets in their own loading workflows.
Future sessions will tune for:
- Longer barrels
- Optic-equipped rifles
- Alternate hunting profiles
This entry establishes the short-barrel SBL baseline.
Loads Evaluated (Initial Phase)
1) 300 Grain Rhino — .44 Magnum
- Heavy, stable impulse
- Consistent vertical behavior
- Indicates suitability for controlled, deep-penetration roles
- Serves as an upper-weight reference for the platform
2) 240 Grain Rhino — .44 Magnum
- Balanced recoil impulse
- Tightest overall grouping in this session
- Shows strong compatibility with 16.1″ barrel dwell time
- Early indication of an ideal SBL-specific weight class
3) 240 Grain Badger Flat — .44 Magnum
- Sharper impulse
- Greater sensitivity to barrel harmonics
- Demonstrates how flat-base construction reacts differently in short lever-gun barrels

Shooter Notes
- One round clearly identified and documented as shooter error
- Iron sights intentionally retained to expose true mechanical behavior
- Lead Sled used to isolate bullet and platform variables, not recoil management
Key Takeaways (Early, but Directional)
- Lever guns benefit most from platform-specific bullet tuning
- Bullet construction matters as much as bullet weight
- The 16.1″ SBL barrel favors bullets that stabilize early in the pressure curve
- “Universal” handgun/rifle loads are inherently compromised
This session confirms that a dedicated SBL-tuned cartridge is both achievable and justified.
